Good morning and a blessed Thursday morning to you.

Would you open up your Bible, please, for our time in God’s Word, to Ephesians, the first chapter? Ephesians chapter 1.

It’s called the Rule of Three.

And it’s the understanding that people understand concepts or ideas or situations, and they become more memorable if they’re grouped in a grouping of three.

For example, the good, the bad, the ugly, or stop, look, listen, or even snap, crackle, pop.

It’s the Rule of Three.

We see groups of three in Scripture.

For example, in Ephesians, the first chapter, beginning with verse 15, we read:

“I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints. And for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers; that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know Him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may perceive what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power for us who believe according to the working of His great power.”

Well, there’s that grouping of three: hope, riches, and power.

Turn over, please, to the fifth chapter of Ephesians, verse 14.

Here you see another grouping of three:

“Therefore it says, ‘Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’”

Awake. Rise. Shine.

A grouping of three.

When I think of our Lord and this example of service that the Lord gives us, why, there are three passages that come to mind.

First, in John, the 13th chapter, where Scripture recounts for us how, just before the crucifixion, Jesus washed the stinking feet of the disciples.

The second person of the Trinity. God in the flesh. The Lord Jesus Christ, washing the feet of the disciples.

Or a second example of a group of three: I think of Philippians 2, where it talks about how Jesus did not count equality with God as something to be grasped, but humbled Himself, taking the form of a slave, going to the cross to die for you and for me, bearing our sin and paying the debt we could never pay.

Or I think of the third example, Mark, the 10th chapter, where it says:

“The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Just three examples when it comes to service today.

And who might you serve?

Anyone come to mind?

How about three people who come to mind today?

Let’s pray.

Gracious Heavenly Father, thank You for this time in Your Word. Your Word is truth.

We thank You, O Lord, that You indeed call us to be a people of service.

And so, Lord, we ask that You would give us opportunity today to serve three people, that we might glorify You as we serve them.

May You be glorified.
