Good morning and a blessed Thursday morning to you. Would you open your Bible, please, to the longest psalm in Scripture—Psalm 119? Psalm 119 has 176 verses, and this morning I’d like to look at one of those verses with you.

We’re going to look at verse 105. This Sunday is a very special day in the life of our congregation—Rally Sunday. It’s such a great day, as we rally anew around the Word of God.

Sunday School for ages three through adult is at 10:00, in between the worship hours. It is a wonderful time to delve into God’s Word. Adults, I’ll be beginning a new class at 10:00 in the sanctuary on the book of Joshua. It is such a fascinating study. When you look at the person of Joshua, the events recorded in the book, how it points to the Lord Jesus Christ, and its applicability for our lives—it’s powerful. This will be a nine-week study, beginning this Sunday.

Also this Sunday, on Rally Day, we’re beginning a new sermon series that will extend for nine months until the end of May. We are going to look at the red-letter words of Jesus. So often in the Bible we see the words of Jesus written in red, hence the title of the series: The Red-Letter Words. Over the coming months we’ll look deeply at what Jesus said. The series is divided into seven sections—really mini-series within the larger series. I so look forward to starting this journey with you this Sunday.

Now, Psalm 119:105 is such a beautiful verse as we anticipate Rally Sunday: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Let’s break that down a little.

“Your word”—in other words, God’s Word. Not just any word, but the Word by which God speaks to us in the Scriptures. As we lift up the Holy Scriptures, we know the voice we hear is God’s voice. This is his inerrant and infallible Word. It is not the word of the world, not the word of reason, not the word of the majority. No, it is God’s Word.

“Your word is…” Not “might be,” not “maybe,” not “if the situation is right.” No—God’s Word is.

And what is it? A lamp. God’s Word illumines. God’s Word dispels the darkness. Like when you walk into a dark room and flip the switch—the light comes on, and the darkness scatters. So it is with God’s Word.

The verse continues: “to my feet and a light to my path.” This Word is directly applicable to all of us. And that Word continually points us to the Lord Jesus Christ and the beautiful message of the Gospel—that our sins are forgiven through the cross, that the tomb is empty, that the Lord reigns.

The Word of God is precious. It is a treasure. It is what we are to turn to every day—in personal devotion, in corporate worship, in small groups—as we continually immerse ourselves in it.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Let’s rally anew around God’s Word this Sunday as he feeds us.

Let’s pray:
Gracious Heavenly Father, we thank you for this time in your Word. Your Word is truth. We ask your blessing upon this Rally Sunday. Thank you, Lord, for the joy and privilege of opening the pages of Scripture and studying together. Bless, O Lord, from the youngest among us to the oldest, as we gather for study. May you be praised. We give you thanks for how you will feed us, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

God bless you. Encourage someone today!
