When I was in high school, to fulfill the language requirement, I took French; and to be honest with you I didn’t enjoy that class one bit. The teacher was a good teacher, but as he was teaching, one of the things he would sometimes do would be to simply call us individually by name to stand up for an oral examination. He would then, in French, ask us questions, and we had to respond in French. Whenever he came to times for those oral examinations, I tried to look very ,very busy when I came into the classroom. I would search for the chair that maybe was as far away from the teacher as possible. I didn’t look forward to those pop quizzes one bit.

Well, today I’ve got a pop quiz for you! But relax…. we’re just going to turn to God’s Holy Word and see what God’s Word has to say. So, here’s the first question in my pop quiz: Are you justified because of your faith or through your faith? Have you come to an answer? If the answer is through your faith, you answered correctly. I think of 2nd Corinthians, the fifth chapter, where we see this truth: 2 nd Corinthians 5:17 “So if anyone is in Christ there’s a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new. 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.”

Through the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, God justified the whole world. The whole world was declared not guilty. Your faith simply receives the justification that has been won. That’s really good news isn’t it? Let’s look at Ephesians 2:8 “ For by grace you have been saved through faith and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not the result of works so that no one may boast.”

Here comes the final question of our pop quiz today. Are you ready? Is it the strength of your faith that saves? No, it’s not the strength of your faith. It’s the object of your faith, the Lord Jesus.. Romans 3:23 “Since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, who God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement, by his blood, effective through faith.” Notice the object of our faith; we’re justified his grace as gift for the redemption that is in Christ whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement, Jesus Christ, the object of our faith.

Let’s pray: Gracious Heavenly Father, thank you for this time in your Word. Your Word is truth. Thank you that we’re justified, not because of our faith, but through our faith. Thank you Lord that our faith that you give is simply that which receives the justification that has been won for us. And thank you Lord that it’s not the strength of our faith that saves; rather the object of our faith , the Lord Jesus. That’s good news for today. In Jesus name we pray. Lord richly bless you. Encourage someone!
