Good morning, and a blessed Thursday morning to you.  Jesus did something that would drive his enemies crazy. Do you know what it is?   What drove Jesus’ enemies crazy, is that Jesus would eat and talk with sinners.

Open your Bible to Luke 19:5-7:

5 When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. 7 All who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.”

It drove the enemies of Jesus crazy, that he would talk and eat with sinners.

With that as a background, let’s look at Luke chapter 24.  Now when we come to this section of Holy Scripture, this is after the resurrection and it's before the ascension of our Lord.  Let’s pick up in Luke 24:13

13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16 but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

Now go to verse 27…

Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

So they don't realize yet that this is the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ that is giving these instructions. It's late, and they urged Jesus to come and stay with him.  So picking up in verse 30:

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight.

Could it be that they were kept from seeing that it was Jesus until Jesus broke the bread, so that we would be reminded that the Lord Jesus Christ encounters us in Word and in Sacrament. For you see, Jesus keeps coming to us sinners.

Let's pray: Lord Jesus we give you thanks, that as you ate and talked with sinners in ancient day, so you still come to us.  Thank you Lord that we encounter you in Word and Sacrament.  Thank you for the cross, where by our sins have been paid for. Thank you for the empty tomb. The sacrifice has been accepted.  Thank you Lord for your grace and forgiveness for us sinners. Amen.

God bless you this day. Encourage someone!
